Your MBA School Has Closed! Now What?

The first thing you need to do is decide that you WILL continue to pursue your MBA. Do not get discouraged. The second thing you need to do is do some research on your action steps with respect to loans you may have taken out to pursue your MBA, transferrable credits from one institution to another, quality of the MBA program to which you may want to transfer, the teaching model and cost of the program at the new institution.

Your school’s closure is no longer a rare thing. There have been many school closings within the past 15-18 months due to various reasons. Not all the schools which were forced to close were at fault and yes, others did not do justice to you as a learner. But now, YOU need to focus on YOU.

You started your MBA for your own reasons. You desired a promotion. You wanted a boost in income. You wanted more prestige. You wanted higher learning. A good MBA should be able to help you with all of these points. An excellent MBA should also give you real-life or real-work experience to practice what you learn, while you are learning.

A school which cares about YOU should accept your credits, up to the allowable limit—not to get you to take more courses for which you have to pay more money. You can research what to do about your student loans—in some cases there is a forgiveness of these loans, but with that comes a potential loss of all credits earned. Were you studying on ground or online? A good MBA program should give you similar learning experiences, whether on ground or online. What is the teaching model of the new school? Will you get hands-on training as well as your degree, or just a degree? What will the new school cost? There are quality schools which do not charge much money for an MBA. There are schools which can get you through the MBA program in less than one year.

Don’t be discouraged. Look at this situation as an opportunity—an opportunity to continue to learn.
